At St Helen’s, the children learn a broad and exciting curriculum taught through a ‘themed’ or ‘topic’ approach.

Subjects such as Computing, Science, Art, PSHE, Music, PE and Design Technology are timetabled every week and the children also study French from Reception all the way to Year 6.

We believe that children learn best when engaged with meaningful, creative and practical activities and we seek to encourage the children to be inquisitive, exploring topics to gain greater understanding, and to think for themselves.  We want our children to be enthusiastic learners and develop skills such as resilience and team working which will support their learning as they progress through school.  Topics are also brought to life through exciting trips.  From our Reception and infant children joining other local children at the infant music festival to Year 3 and 4 finding out about the Romans at Carleon in Wales, or Year 5 and 6 visiting the SS Great Britain in Bristol, trips help to inspire the children and bring their topic to life.

The topics are enhanced by ‘WOW’ days, which are opportunities for the children to immerse themselves for the day in the topic. For example, during the recent Year 3 and 4 topic on natural disasters, the children came to school dressed up to survive extreme weather, whether that be an arctic explorer to a farmer enduring the flooding in the Somerset levels!

We are also really proud of the specialist teaching provided at St Helen’s and on Wednesdays, all children receive Music, French and PE taught by our specialist teachers and sports coaches.

As a Church of England school, RE and collective worship are important times of the week of us. We aim to develop the whole child and follow a ‘values-based’ curriculum, where we explore and develop values such as trust, honesty, respect, friendship and family. We encourage the children to think about others and the school often runs fundraising days, such as ‘Daffodil Day’ which raised over £500 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
